Secret Wars

Vinyl Abuse proudly sponsors Secret Wars, the mural battle taking place over the next few months at London’s Juno Bar. Put simply, it is a war between artists. The ultimate question however, is who will reign supreme? The only weapon they carry is the pen they hold in their hand.

secret wars

16 artists in this first series of the competition, each of whom has been hand picked to battle against one another for approximately one and a half hours each round. The aim of the game is to create a piece of art that is going to impress the judging panel, who will then cast their vote at the end of each round, determining who will make it to the next stage.

Check out the Secret Wars website for more info on the fixtures, the prizes and also the memories of each event. The next war is on Saturday (30th September). Jaime Hayon @ Aram Gallery

Jaime Hayon was in London last week for several events. First up he gave a talk as part of London Design Week, introducing a VIP crowd to his history and current work. Last Thursday saw the launch of his latest interior for Camper Shoes at the flagship store in London.

Finally, Aram Gallery held a superb opener for Jaime’s exhibition of furniture and scultptural ceramics. Many a glass of champagne was consumed – along with some fine ham and chocolates!

Whilst you may not be familiar with Hayon’s other design work outside of his toys – it is well worth examining to discover the intricate process he goes through to produce amazing product. Jaime has been around the toy scene for nearly 10 years, with close ties to Devilrobots and Toy2r having been formed over that time. He has been strongly influenced by the forms of characters – and has created little figures within more wodely considered product (see the bunny head ceramic vase above). Expect Hayon to return to the toy scene very soon… but not in the form you may be expecting…!

Jellymonograms – colour samples

Jellymon have sent us exclusive images of the latest stage of their Jellymonogram toy. It looks like the little fellas are already causing mischief. Jellymon explain, “the idea for the toy came about from our thinking about the process of design toys being about people turning their 2D work into 3D so we wanted to start with something which is super-flat like a print and see if we (and Eddi) could translate it.”

These production prototypes need a few small tweaks and then we will get to see the graphics that will accompany each figure… plus a few sneaks of the artist series!!!

Jellymonogram will be produced by adFunture and look set to be released in December.

MICHAEL LAU – interview video

There aren’t many legends in this toy world – but there is one pioneer who has reached that status during his ten years of figure design. If you know vinyl toys, then you know from where it all originated – but you can still learn more about its origins everyday.

Victor over at CrazyToyz posted a couple of clips of an interview with Michael Lau. It’s a casual insight into how Michael has developed as an artist.

The film is up on YouTube in 2 parts.

Watch part 1 on YouTube.

Mozzarella

STRANGECo have sent us word of the release of Mozzarella – the next vinyl figure from Simone Legno and tokidoki.

Mozzarella

Mozzarella is the leader of The Moofia, a gang asembled to extort milk from lunchboxes of schoolyard bullies. According to local sources, she’s loving and kind to good kids but ruthless and feared by those who harass the innocent.

Mozzarella patrols schoolyards from the first week of October… capiche!
