Why did you choose the infamous Pillsbury Doughboy as the platform? "Around this time, I was also purchasing quite a few vintage toys from ebay. I was especially leaning towards advertising icons that companies had turned into toys. One of the auctions that I won was a Pillsbury Doughboy figure. As soon as i received the Doughboy, I knew this was exactly what I had been looking for. The Doughboy is such a classic advertising figure - he has been around for quite some time and almost everyone has seen him at some point in their life. The toy itself is very smooth, allowing a lot of flat surface to customize."continued... How did you get the show started? "I ran the idea by a few people who immediately expressed interest in it, so I realized I was onto something quite interesting and unique. As for the figures, I went through an ebay shopping spree and bought up as many Doughboy figures as I could get my hands on, then sent them all out to the artists who had agreed to be in the show." What has this collection of master customisers brought to your original idea? "This show is a study in how each person's artistic mind interprets this classic, simple figure. By selecting an untapped figure/shape, I think we were able to eliminate any outside influences. The results you are seeing are 100% from the minds/imaginations/childhoods/nightmares of each of these artists."
Are the results what you expected? "The show is also a challenge and a learning experience, as each of the artists had to figure out how to make the figure stand, how to prime the vintage surface, and also how to firm up the pliable figure. By learning together and working with each other, I feel this is truly a group effort. I am very proud of what everyone has done so far, and I can't wait to see what the rest of the artists come up with. These artists have surpassed my expectations by 1000%!"
