The Story

Currently the rubber ducky has no-one to play with. Although this isn’t the only reason we created Otto and friends, we think that children, parents and hipsters alike deserve another friend for the bathtub.

Otto-the-Octopus

Otto is the loyal friend that we all need. He is always there for you to brighten your day. Otto loves leisurely swimming sideways & bopping around in the water.

You can help to fund the creation of Otto (& eventual friends) by checking out FiveFtTwo at IndieGoGo.

MonsterPants’ New Sea-Borgs figures

Making their debut at New York Comic Con are six new Sea-Borg figures from MonsterPants. The first three will be:

  • SB-111 SEA-BORG QUEEN – Ready in green to defend her realm with her Diamond Mace!
  • SB-112 SEA-BORG SIREN – The purple mistress of persuasion, she wields a Pearl Scepter!
  • SB-113 SEA-BORG NIX – Vibrant yellow warrior, comes armed with her Bubble Gun!

All are handmade and packaged by filmmaker James Felix McKenney and can be purchased for $25 each at the MonsterPants booth #3116 at New York Comic Con or at the MonsterPants online store after the convention.

Once the sole inhabitants of a planet covered entirely in water, the beings that would become known as the Sea-Borgs were an advanced and peaceful race. Then one day an army of Invaders attacked their world, stripping it of its valuable natural resources and nearly wiping out the worlds’ undersea civilizations. The survivors from the various kingdoms banded together, rebuilding their ruined bodies with cybernetic weaponry and armor in order to combat the alien attackers who continue to exploit and pollute their world.

Chuppi – TADO x MATHMOS

“Iconic UK brand MATHMOS have teamed up with graphic art duo TADO to create Chuppi – the perfect interactive child’s nightlight AND an adult’s collectable art toy. The wireless colour changing customizable Chuppi available internationally from the 30th April at www.MATHMOS.com and is priced at £30 (40EU).

Harnessing almost 50 years of MATHMOS ambient lighting expertise, Chuppi can be set on a single colour or allowed to cycle through the spectrum. He (or she!) will fade off automatically after half an hour, but can also be set to stay alight. Each Chuppi comes with reusable stickers for 18 different characters allowing for full customization. Should you ever tire of your light giving companion you can simply rearrange the stickers. Wirelessly this unique customizable art toy and light lasts for up to 6 hours and you simply place Chuppi on their home to charge.

Commenting on the collaboration TADO said:

“The main challenge was coming up with a fun little guy that offered something a little bit different to the customizable toy market. As such we wanted to try and make something that could be used either as it comes, or as a platform to be customized, with the added dimension of it being illuminated. The stickers we created also allow people to have some fun and get creative without having to break out the pens and paints! We worked really closely with MATHMOS to come up with the characters shape and pose, a true collaborative project in every sense of the world and we are delighted with the results.”

We’re really excited to get our hands on a Chuppi, in the worlds of Steve Carrell, “I love lamp”.  Leave it to TADO to be the one’s to come out with a customisable toy as awesome and innovative as this.  The stickers alone make it possible to create hundreds of different quirky characters.  It’s going to be awesome seeing the customs that are created from this form, especially as the lighting element can play a big part in the creative process.  Keep your eyes peeled for a full review as and when get our mitts on a Chuppi of our own.

The Sucklord presents OCCUPY CYBERTRON

In his first official event since being voted off a popular reality TV show, The Sucklord will offer for sale selections from a new body of work paying homage to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

What: The Sucklord presents OCCUPY CYBERTRON
Where: END OF CENTURY, 237 Eldridge Street, NY, NY 10002
When: December 7th, 2011: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

OCCUPY CYBERTRON will serve as the launch event for a new line of collectible “art toys” inspired by the Occupy Wallstreet Movement. On December 7th, the Sucklord, acting as the leader of the Decepticons, will defend his vast fortunes against a solidarity protest of Autobots, which represent the 99%, in a conceptual performance art piece that will “occupy” the End of Century retail space and gallery in New York City’s Lower East Side.

Longtime Sucklord co-conspirator The Crystal Pharoah will appear for a DJ set, and Beerlao has joined the cause as a drink sponsor.

According to The Sucklord,

“In the spirit of the 1% that an evil supervillain such as myself represents, I thought the timing was ripe for Suckadelic to appropriate the Occupy Wall Street movement for my own material gain… so I made action figures of the protesters and the masters of the universe who financially control them. They make great Christmas gifts.”

A small batch of limited edition OCCUPY CYBERTRON trading cards have been produced for the event by a collaboration between Suckadelic, Appro Nation (Creators of “The Art Hustle” contemporary art and artist trading cards) and Sidekick Media (manufacturer of the Suckadelic Suckpax trading card series).

A free pack of cards will be given to anyone who attends the event in a costume relevant to the theme. The Sucklord will also be offering a limited quantity of custom art toy action figures in 8”, 3 ¾” and 3” scales for sale.

Ready for some Inkygoodness? – Interview

VA: Inkygoodness appears to be taking over the world, tell us more about yourselves!

IG: Michelle and I started Inkygoodness in 2008, and the idea was built on a passion for illustration and character design, developed during our degree courses and lots of trips to exhibitions and creative events over the last few years. The initiative started off as a small exhibition showing just our own work back in 2008, and quickly evolved into group shows with our friends and other like-minded creatives.

Our aim is to showcase new and emerging talent in this discipline alongside more established artists working in the field, offering a unique oppotunity for networking and collaboration. To date we have hosted events and exhibitions in Bristol, Birmingham, London, Manchester & Berlin respectively, showcasing work by a growing collection of artists from around the world. Berlin is our first international exhibition and we are very proud!

VA: Your Character Totem project is a great and definately unique concept, who came up with the idea?

IG: Having organised several group exhibitions which have been presented as ‘gallery’ shows, we were itching to do something a little bit different for the next Inkygoodness project. Pitching to Pictoplasma was our sole aim, but we knew we had to think outside the box to secure a spot on the Character Walk! The idea of doing an installation had been playing our minds for a while, and we liked the idea of customising objects or cut-outs.

We also wanted to create a show that would be fun to do, and of course incorporating character design, which is central to the Pictoplasma event. Uniting these elements gave birth to the Character Totem concept!

VA: How did it feel to get the call to say you had made the character walk tour?

IG: Absolutely amazing. We received the e-mail on the evening of our Dreamboat exhibition opening, and it was really hard keeping it a secret!! Up until that point we hadn’t seriously considered how we were going to deliver the project, so whilst we were incredibly excited, we were also freaking out a little bit!

VA: How did you find Pictoplasma? Can you explain what the show is to those who may not have had the chance to go yet?

IG: It was about 6 years ago, I had recently moved to London and I was trawling through the collection of illustration and character design books in my University library, and I think I just stumbled across one of the first editions of the Pictoplasma Character Book and instantly fell in love with the idea. I think after that I googled Pictoplasma and found the site and read about the festival and knew immediately that I had to go!!

VA: How do you choose who you guys work with?

IG: Since the beginning I have always picked artists that inspire me, whose work I love and admire. I am a huge fan of characer design and illustration, especially the recent surge in tactile illustrations composed of cut-outs, paper and random objects. Most of the artists we work with are illustrators or character designers, and have a strong hand-made aesthetic to their work.

Flickr and twitter are surprising sources of information for new artists on the scene, and of course I pick up a lot of industry magazines, blogs and exhibition invitations which offer the perfect opportunity to find new artists. We also receive a ton of submissions throughout the year, and we hand pick the best ones.

VA: Who were your highlights this year?

IG: Meeting so many talented artists and sharing a beer with them was pretty cool, I loved Ryan Quincy’s exhibition of paintings – it’s exactly the sort of thing I enjoy. It was great to see Mc Bess again, and catch up with friends like Louise Evans (Felt Mistress). The Character Walk was a little hit and miss, but the Crim Collective produced one of the best exhibitions with their ‘Mechanicalism’ concept – inspired by vinyl toy culture and the popularity of collectable characters.

VA: Who are your all time favourite characters?

IG: I am a huge fan of Gary Baseman’s work, and have a number of his Qee toys, I also love Felt Mistress plushies (though I can’t afford to buy them yet!) – I’m not a massive collector, but I do love cartoons – Cartman is probably one of my favourites!

The follow up show will be coming to Birmingham, scheduled for the We Are Birmingham space in June. Keep an eye on Inkygoodness and Inkygoodness on Facebook for future details!

Kaiju Bossy Bear attacks in May!

Bossy Bear, the demanding character from the mind of David Horvath, has transmutated into the 5” Strange Beast Bossy Bear or as witnesses have dubbed him – Monster Bossy Bear! With an SRP of $20, your chances of catching one is good but act fast as there have been rumors of multiple versions as well as the Roseus (or Pink) version sighted.

Altering from his earlier form into a higher state – that of the Kaiju form – Bossy Bear is now more formidable than ever. As part of Toy2R’s scheduled releases for 2011, the Monster Bossy Bear Assortment will delight fans of both the classic form and new fans of his Kaiju inspired look.

Two versions will be released in the assortment – the Classic Blue and the Roseus (or Pink) edition. Fans should be on the look out for variant versions within the assortment as one can never be sure what mood Bossy will be in.

Never really collected much David Horvath/Uglydoll stuff but I really can’t wait for these to drop.  An awesome mashup of western vinyl and kaiju and I look forward to future kaiju figures and colourways, maybe some GID or transprency would be nice ;)

Sergey Safonov’s Luno the Moon Rover

Luno the Moon Rover is a character-based spaceship created by Sergey Safonov the man behind the toy collection database Rotocasted. Luno is both an art sculpture and a toy for painting and playing. It is designed with storytelling in mind and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first man in space.

Luno the Moon Rover is about 5 inches in diameter with three spinning wheels. Mini Luno is about 3 inches in diameter. Both sizes of Luno will be made of hand-cast resin and painted glossy white.  Follow the updates to watch the progress of Mini Luno with Crazy Label!

About the Designer:

Toy designer, Sergey Safonov, dreamed of space travel all throughout his childhood in Russia. As a kid, Sergey was surrounded with space memorabilia: He had tons of space related-books and magazines, space food (tiny bricks of bread and space tubes) and April 12th was a family holiday. The only problem Sergey had with space toys was that all of them were replicas of spaceships and mechanisms, and he was looking for characters with which to play and tell stories. Now Sergey Safonov is grown up with a young son of his own, so he is trying to create his own space character: Luno the Moon Rover.

Sergey has been creating characters and producing original, hand-made toys for many years. His work has appeared in the books Dot Dot Dash and Art-Toys and the magazine, Design Bureau. He is currently working on a picture book about his characters, the Gooma. The following photos are several of Sergey’s original resin toys. They are available as part of one of the reward options for people who pledge to help produce Luno the Moon Rover.

Another great piece, (hopefully) made possible by KickStarter.  I can’t help but notice that Luno looks kinda like Pooka from Dig Dug, which is awesome in itself :]  Go pledge, every dollar helps and you can receive your own Luno, Mini Luno and more toys & art by Safonov.
